Internet Security

Ad-Aware - A free program to find spyware on your system and remove it. A new version, Ad-Aware SE, has just been released which has enhanced protection and is hardened against being maliciously closed down by hackers and virus infection. Still free for non-commercial use with Pro (paid-for) version available.
AntiVir - An excellent free virus protection program. The virus data is updated very frequently.
AVG Antivirus - Another excellent antivirus suite. There is a free-for-personal-use version available with frequent virus data updates. It is necessary to register the software for use but registration is free. Your e-mail address and location is required for this. Once you have registered, the download URL is sent to the e-mail address you gave and when the download is complete a serial number is sent.
Hostess - A database program to maintain URL and IP address data in your hosts file.
Mailwasher - An excellent mail filtering program that works with any E-Mail client. Lists email before it's downloaded. Has the ability to delete unwanted or suspicious E-Mails from the mail server so you never download them to your PC. Blacklist facility, 'bounce' emails in an attempt to get removed from lists, and customisable filters. Free or pay-for versions. Well worth a try.
Safety Online - A good web site dealing with all aspects of online safety. Well worth a visit!
Shields Up - A system to test your personal firewall software. Scroll down the home page and look under 'Hot Spots'. Steve Gibson's web site is very interesting and deals with security issues - well worth a good look round. He also provides some very useful free software.
Spybot - Search and Destroy - Another excellent program to remove spyware from your system. Award winning software.
Zone Alarm - Another good firewall that many think is the best. Free for personal use.
Hosts File Data - This is a direct link to a hosts file that currently contains data for over 19000 banner-serving sites, all given the IP address 127.0.0.1. The file is in ZIP format and should only take a few seconds to download, even on a modem. Extract hosts into the appropriate folder on your computer and speed up your surfing.

Firefox Firefox is an excellent free Java-based web browser. For simple installation get the Installer for Windows. There are versions for most major operating systems. To get full functionality you'll also need to install Sun's Java runtime environment available free from Sun. I've been using this browser for over 3 years now and I am very pleased with it. It's a security solution that will enhance your browsing and avoid the problems caused by the weaknesses of Mr. Gates' web browser! You'll also save quite a bit of disk space, and the built-in popup stopper is brilliant. Another great feature is tabbed browsing - you'll wonder how you ever managed without it. There is also built-in cookie management that works well and is easy to set up. I have no connection with Mozilla nor will I benefit from you using Firefox.
